Everyone gets into the car with wet coats, and the inside of the windows begins to mist. The fan is running, but the glass is still difficult to see through. One setting worth checking is whether the system is circulating cabin air or bringing in outside air.
Use the defogging procedure for your exact vehicle. Automatic climate systems may change several settings together, and their behaviour differs between models.
Find the intended demist mode
Before driving, locate the windscreen defrost or demist control in the owner’s manual. Check what it does to fan speed, air distribution, air conditioning and recirculation. The recirculation symbol usually concerns where air comes from; it is not simply another word for cooling.
Moisture brought into the cabin by occupants and wet belongings can contribute to internal fogging. Repeatedly recirculating that air may be unhelpful in conditions where the vehicle’s prescribed defogging mode calls for fresh air.
Clear the view before setting off. If visibility deteriorates on the road, use the appropriate controls and stop safely if necessary. Do not continue because a small cleared patch seems sufficient.
Distinguish the side of the glass
Condensation on the outside and fog on the inside are different observations. Check safely while stationary rather than assuming every misted window has the same cause. Wipers address the outside surface; they do not remove interior condensation.
Keep the glass clean using a suitable product and the manufacturer’s guidance. Remove unnecessary wet items where practical, but do not obstruct vents or leave loose objects where they can interfere with driving.
Record a persistent problem
If the correct procedure does not restore a clear view, note the weather, occupancy, settings and whether the problem affects one area or several. Persistent damp, unusual smells, weak airflow or a malfunctioning control deserves inspection.
This check does not diagnose a leak or climate-system fault. It helps distinguish an overlooked operating setting from a problem that needs a qualified technician, while keeping visibility as the immediate priority.
This Ford owner manual notes that prolonged recirculation may cause window fogging. It is an example of manufacturer guidance; use the manual for your own vehicle for the correct controls and procedure.
